ABOUT DR. YEAMAN:
Dr. Michael R. Yeaman’s research strives to understand the relationship between infection and immunity. His laboratory focuses on defining structure-activity correlations in natural and synthetic antimicrobial peptides. This knowledge can be used to design and develop novel and improved agents and strategies for prevention or treatment of life-threatening infections caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

One of Dr. Yeaman’s most significant discoveries was that of a multidimensional signature in immune system molecules evolved to defend against infection. Published by the National Academy of Sciences USA, this breakthrough revealed an immune system pattern that recurs across all forms of life. Subsequently, Dr. Yeaman and his team discovered how this pattern accelerates the ability of the human immune system to fend off microbial threats. Based on these findings, Dr. Yeaman designed and patented next generation “smart” antibiotics that sense and redirect toxicity of microbes against themselves. Dr. Yeaman also discovered the structural commonalities between the bacterium Staphylococcus and the fungus Candida that enabled development of the first cross-kingdom vaccine, designed to protect against life-threatening infections caused by both organisms, and which is now entering Phase II human clinical trials. With an eye to developing this and other vaccine candidates, he and colleagues founded NovaDigm Therapeutics, Inc.
